The Beauty that is the Waikato

Waikato River | Waikato Regional Council
Kia Ora, for the month of November, we wanted to give a special shout-out to our King Country- the Waikato region.
Having been a keen explorer of Aotearoa, the Waikato has always had a special place in my heart.

The Waikato rohe (area) has 1,200 km of coastline and is full of forests, gorges, waterways, mountain ranges and geothermal features. You’ll no doubt see the Waikato River on your way to your next destination.

There are two key attractions for anyone who comes to visit the Waikato that you need to see. The first one is a no-brainer- Hobbiton Movie Set.

The Hobbiton Movie Set is a unique destination as it is the only place like this in the world. It is home to Sir Peter Jackson’s iconic Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit films and is a world-renowned icon.

You get to see what it was like for Bilbo Baggins as you explore the Shire itself, see up close the Hobbit holes and experience the beauty of nature and rolling pastures. There are dining packages you can choose from as well. Every visit includes a trip to the Green Dragons Inn, where you will receive a complimentary Hobbit Southfarthing Beverage to conclude your Middle Earth adventure.

But wait, there’s more!

I mentioned two must-see attractions, and the second one is the Waitomo Caves.

Waitomo Caves is a special part of the Waikato. Thousands of glow worms have called this their home for over 30 million years.

The tour itself is unlike one you would’ve ever seen before- there are stream passages and a serene boat ride where you can wonder upon these magical creatures. As most guides are direct descendants of the Maori Chief who discovered the cave, they bring the history of the glow worms and the caves to life.
